SOPHIA – Helena Johannson

This is my beautiful sister, Sophia, on her wedding day. When I got this photo, I knew it needed something special. Then I got my DT-box from Dusty Attic, and in it was a large Window with Shutters (DA0946) and I just knew it was the perfect chippie for this amazing photo!
I started making this as a regular layout, but decided pretty soon in the process to make it into a canvas, so I just glued the papers on a 30×30 canvas. This page is made to display – not to be put in an album because it’s way too dimensional!

Now let me walk you through this layout and how I created it. I started with a single piece of paper and laid out the window with shutters. It looked a little flat, so I took out the window frames and let them be open, as if you are watching this gorgeous bride from the outside.
I then painted the window and shutters with white gesso. A tip – if you want an instant shabby look, just let the painted surface dry for a minute or two on a piece of paper, then some of the paint will stick on the paper and voilá – a shabby look!

I glued the window frames into place with hot glue, you need something that sticks fast when you are doing this! I then added lots of flowers and vines. You can spot a couple of Dusty in BloomsCelestial White (DA0800) and lots of Dusty in Blooms leaves. I then painted two Swirly Vines (DA0751) white and tucked them into the flower clusters, one on each side of the open window.

I continued to build up with flowers, and also added a couple of Flutterbies #3 (DA0766) that I kept raw to make them more visible against all the white.
Here’s a better look at the shabby shutter. I have used gorgeous butterflies from Reneabouquets, the black accents this light page perfectly!

As a final touch I added bits of Tim Holtz filmstrip and arranged them over, under and around the flowers and window frames.

I then just needed something special for the top of the window, and here I have used a metal embellishment from Petaloo, a resin piece and a metal door knob that I had laying around.

Here’s another look of the filmstrip and some of the flowers:
